Annual Mohawk Field Hockey Tournament at Siena College
Dear Field Hockey Team Captains,
The Mohawk Field Hockey Association is pleased to announce its sixteenth High School Indoor Hockey Tournament. The tournament will be held at Siena College Athletic Complex on Saturday, January 9, 2010 (snow date - Sunday, Jan. 10). Again, this year there will be two divisions: Junior Varsity and Varsity. The Junior Varsity Division will play in the morning (approx. 8:00 – 12:00). The Varsity will play in the afternoon and early evening (approx. 12:00 – 5:30). Times are subject to change depending on interest in the JV division and number of teams. If there is no JV division, the Varsity will start approximately 9:30.
The fee is $150 per Varsity team (minimum of six, maximum of ten players) and $110 per JV team (minimum of six, maximum of ten players). Please write one check per team and make the non-refundable check payable to Mohawk Field Hockey Association. Please return payment and roster form by Monday, December 21. No entries will be accepted after this date. The Junior Varsity division is limited to 10 teams and the Varsity division will be limited to 18 teams. Applications will be accepted on a first come-first serve basis and then a lottery basis. Directions and the tournament schedule will be sent a couple days before the tournament.
The money received from the entrance fee will go towards paying for the facility, prizes, insurance, officials and our Field Hockey Camp Scholarship Fund. Initiated in 1990 by the Mohawk Field Hockey Association, the scholarship fund provides financial assistance to local high school players so that they may attend the summer field hockey camp of their choice.
Because the tournament is being held off-season, please be aware of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association regulations governing play. Players are not allowed to wear school uniforms or any school logo T-shirts. The team should decide on one color shirt to wear at the tournament. School names or nicknames can not be used as a team name. “All Star” teams or teams assembled for special programs (for e.g. club teams) will not be allowed to register. A player may only play on one team.
We hope you share in our excitement about this tournament, and will consider attending. The success of this tournament will ensure that several young field hockey enthusiasts in our area will have the opportunity to pursue additional instruction and gain valuable experience this coming summer with the help of a Mohawk Field Hockey Association Camp Scholarship.
Enclosed please find the modified indoor rules that will be in effect at the tournament. Notice that all players are required to wear mouthguards and shinguards. Goggles are not necessary since we are using FIH rules. If you have any questions, please contact Jo-Anne Hostig (899-7006 or Tig10@juno.com). Please respond promptly to ensure entry in the tournament.
Thank you.
Jo-Anne Hostig

SUMMARY OF INDOOR FIELD HOCKEY RULES
1. Six players per side including the goalie.
2. Substitutions are unlimited. Exception-No subbing within the period from the award of a penalty corner until after it has been completed. If the substitution is made during play, the player coming off the court must exit before the sub may go on the court.
3. A goal is scored when the ball passes completely over the goal line from within the circle.
4. No hits are allowed. Stick and ball must be in contact at the start of the push pass and reverse sweep. A long pushing or sweeping stroke with the stick along the ground before making contact with the ball is not permitted. After making the push/sweep it is not permitted to follow through with the stick along the ground so that the ball is propelled directly at an opponent.
5. Dangerous play will be penalized.
6. The ball may not be lifted except as a shot on goal. An unintentionally raised ball (less than 10 cm-no higher than their shoe) is allowed unless an opponent is within playing distance, in the direct playing line or an unfair benefit has been gained.
7. On a free push, the opponents must be three meters away from the point of the push unless the ball is within three meters of the circle. In this case, all players must be three meters. The ball must be stationary.
8. On a defensive corner, only the goalie is allowed in the goal. All other defensive players must be on the opposite side of the hitter, outside the goal, and completely behind the endline.
9. When taking a penalty corner, the ball must travel outside the circle but does not need to be stopped before a shot at a goal. No subs are allowed during a penalty corner until after it has been completed.
10. A defensive sixteen yard push is taken whenever the ball goes over the endline, unless the defense intentionally plays or deflects the ball over the endline. In this case, a corner is awarded to the offense. The 16-yard push is taken inside of the circle.
11. All side walls are in play.
12. All players are required to wear mouthguards and shinguards.
13. On a center pass, the push may be played in any direction.
**These rules were taken from the FIH Indoor Hockey Rules but may have been
modified to fit the needs/safety of the participants in the Mohawk tournament.
